DUO CHARGED FOR BRIBERY

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) have charged a former Support Officer of the Nasinu Town Council and a Director of a private company for bribery.
Pauliasi Tabualevu has been charged with two (2) counts of bribery while Jai Shankar has been charged with one (1) count of bribery respectively.
On the first count of Bribery, it is alleged that on or about 30 December 2015 in the Central Division, Pauliasi Tabualevu whilst being a public servant, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, solicited an advantage of FJD $850 from Jai Shankar on account of Pauliasi performing an act in his capacity as a public servant
For the second count of Bribery, it is alleged that between 1 October 2018 and 31 December 2018, in the Central Division, Jai Shankar, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, offered an advantage of FJD$14,520 to Pauliasi Tabualevu as a reward for Pauliasi performing an act in his capacity as a public servant.
On the third count of Bribery, it is alleged that between 1 October 2018 and 31 December 2018, in the Central Division, Pauliasi Tabualevu, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse accepted an advantage of FJD $14,520 from Jai Shankar as a reward for performing an act in his capacity as a public servant.
FICAC Senior State Counsel Laite Bokini-Ratu informed the Court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.
Resident Magistrate Savou granted a non-cash bail of $500 each and ordered Tabualevu and Shankar not to re-offend whilst on bail.
Pauliasi Tabualevu and Jai Shankar were also ordered not to interfere with state witnesses, not to change their residential addresses without first informing the Court and to surrender all travel documents.
Tabualevu is to report to the Valelevu Police Station once a month while Shankar is to report to the Samabula Police Station every month commencing from 28 February 2023.
A stop departure order has been issued against Pauliasi Tabualevu and Jai Shankar.
The matter has been adjourned to 28 July 2023.
