In the Sentence delivered by Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou yesterday (19/02/24), a businessman and owner of Professional Stationery Services, Shalendra Kumar was sentenced to seven (7) years imprisonment.
Shalendra Kumar was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for his involvement in the then Public Works Department (PWD) scam, whereby he colluded with other Public Works Department staff and obtained more than FJD $34,000.00.
The Accused was convicted and sentenced for the offence of obtaining a financial advantage and for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
For the second offence of attempting to pervert the course of justice, the Accused had created false company delivery dockets and back dated them in an attempt that they could be used as evidence to exonerate him. Kumar created these dockets while the criminal case against him was still pending in Court.
Kumar has been sentenced to seven (7) years imprisonment term with a non-parole period of 5 years.
This is the second case successfully prosecuted by the Commission against those involved in the PWD Scam.
