The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has taken a proactive step in ensuring the safety and preparedness of its staff by conducting a comprehensive fire safety training session in collaboration with the National Fire Authority (NFA) on Thursday, 3 April 2025.
This essential training, held at FICAC Headquarters in Suva, saw twenty (20) FICAC personnel participate in a full day of practical and theoretical instruction provided by experienced NFA Life Fire Fighter Ifereimi Kotobalavu Ben Dobui .
The training encompassed critical areas such as Fire Prevention and Awareness, educating staff on potential fire hazards within the workplace and implementing preventative measures, fire extinguisher operation, Providing hands-on experience in the correct and safe use of various fire extinguishers. The training also included the emergency evacuation procedures, conducting drills and instruction on efficient and safe evacuation protocols and basic firefighting techniques, equipping staff with fundamental knowledge and skills to respond effectively to small fires.
FICAC OHS Chair Mr Vatemosi Nailumu said the training equipped the group of people with the right knowledge and training to act in case of facing emergency situations.
“The safety of our staff is paramount. We recognise the importance of being prepared for any emergency situation, and this fire training provided by the NFA is invaluable in equipping our personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively,” Mr Nailumu said.
The efficacy of this fire safety training will be evaluated through rigorous assessment methodologies, ensuring measurable improvements in warden competency and adherence to regulatory compliance."

“This training focuses on evacuation procedures and maintaining good housekeeping practices for fire safety. Evacuation is necessary during any emergency, such as a fire, or any other emergency that may occur in the workplace. In such situations, the designated fire wardens are responsible for guiding personnel to the safe assembly area according to the established emergency plan,” Dobui said.
“Participants learn practical methods for maintaining a safe environment and understanding the available emergency facilities. They are instructed on how to properly utilize these facilities when needed. Crucially, they gain knowledge about the different types of fire extinguishers and the appropriate fire classes for which each extinguisher is designed.”
