The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has written to the Supervisor of Elections on 24 July 2024 informing of its decision to close the file into the matter pertaining to Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum referred to the Commission in February of this year on the allegation of Mr Sayed-Khaiyum failing to declare his overseas travel allowance.
FICAC has concluded its investigation into the matter and confirms that it does not have sufficient evidence to prove that Mr Sayed-Khaiyum had actually breached Section 24 (5) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.
Investigation findings states that the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013 does not address specifically the issue of “Income and the Types of Income” that the Office holders of Political Parties should declare.
Recommendation has also been provided to the Fijian Elections Office in the opinion of FICAC, on areas which needs to be revised and strengthen as not to encounter similar issues in the future and to provide clarity and assistance during the investigation process.
