Court Approves Amended Charges in Kamikamica Case

The trial against former Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament, Manoa Kamikamica will begin proper tomorrow in the Suva Magistrates Court.

The trial was initially set to begin today, however Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) State Counsel, Ms Josann Pene informed the court this morning that the prosecution sought leave to file Amended Charges against Mr Kamikamica.

Despite objections from defence counsel, Mr Wylie Clarke, Resident Magistrate Charles Ratakele granted the prosecution’s request and the amended charges were filed in court this morning and read to the accused in court.

Mr. Kamikamica elected to be tried in the Magistrates Court.

In the amended charges, Mr Kamikamica faces 1 count of Perjury where it is alleged that between 1 December 2024 and 31 March 2025, being lawfully sworn as a witness in a judicial proceeding namely a Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner, wilfully made a material statement on oath, that he had no knowledge of the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner prior to her appointment dated 5 September 2024.

Mr Kamikamica is charged with an alternative count of False Information to A Public Servant, where it alleged that between 1 December 2024 and 31 March 2025, being lawfully sworn in as a witness in a judicial proceeding namely a Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner, gave to the Commissioner of Inquiry (being a person employed in the civil service) information he knew or believed to be false, namely that he had no knowledge of the appointment of the FICAC Commissioner prior to her appointment dated 5 September 2024.

RM Ratakele adjourned the matter to tomorrow for trial.
