FICAC Concludes Prosecution Case in Kamikamica Trial

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has closed its case in the trial of former Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament, Mr Manoa Kamikamica.
The matter continued for its second day of hearing today before Resident Magistrate Charles Ratakele in the Suva Magistrates Court.
FICAC Senior State Counsel, Ms Josann Pene, called the prosecution's second and final witness, former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Mr Kalaveti Ravu.
Ms Pene questioned Mr Ravu about events that transpired on 8 July 2024 following a Parliamentary sitting.
Mr Ravu testified that several Cabinet members had questioned him regarding the Abuse of Office charges brought against him by FICAC.
However, he declined to identify those individuals, stating that they were his colleagues.
Ms Pene also questioned Mr Ravu about entries recorded in his personal diary in 2024.
The diary entry, dated 8 July 2024, recorded that Deputy Prime Minister Mr Kamikamica and former Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad had asked Mr Ravu about the progress of his FICAC matter.
In the diary entry dated 5 August 2024, Mr Ravu recorded that Mr Kamikamica had informed him that Ms Barbara Malimali would be appointed as FICAC Commissioner and that the information was for his legal counsel.
When asked why he had documented the conversation, Mr Ravu testified that he recorded the information as a reminder because it related to his court matter.
Following the conclusion of the prosecution's examination-in-chief, defence counsel Mr Wylie Clarke informed the court that the defence would not be cross-examining Mr Ravu.
Following the conclusion of the prosecution case, Mr Clarke made an application for a No Case to Answer.
Resident Magistrate Ratakele directed that oral submissions will be heard tomorrow from both the prosecution and the defence on the No Case to Answer application.
The matter was adjourned accordingly.
Mr Kamikamica's bail has been extended.
