Former School Manager Jailed for Misusing FEG

Former Nakorotubu District School manager, Mr Kelevi Salauca has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment following his conviction for one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage.

Resident Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci sentenced Mr Salauca today at the Rakiraki Magistrates Court.

Mr Salauca was convicted on 29 June 2026.

The charge relates to 4 cheques totalling $3,700 that were signed and cashed from the school’s Free Education Grant account between 1 and 31 December 2017.

The Court found that Mr Salauca had failed to comply with the procedures governing the use of the Free Education Grant funds.

The withdrawals were made without the approval of the School Management Committee and without the required quotations.

The Court also found that Mr Salauca was solely responsible for handling the 4 cheques.

In sentencing, RM Qalinauci noted that the offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

It took into account that Mr Salauca was a first offender, the partial admissions he had made and the fact that the proceedings had remained before the Court for almost 5 years.

Mr Salauca was ordered to serve 15 months in custody.

The remaining 9 months of his sentence have been suspended for 3 years

Mr Salauca was represented by the Legal Aid Commission while the prosecution was handled by FICAC State Counsel, Ms Lavenia Ravuikadavu and Mr Immanuel Turaga.
