A Senior Road Safety Officer with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) was produced at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday on corruption related offences.
Alipate Balavu Qalomaiwasa was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with two (2) counts of Bribery under the Prevention of Bribery Act No. 12 of 2007.
It is alleged on 29 June 2022, Qalomaiwasa had called a taxi driver concerning notices issued to the said permit holder. During the course of his conversation, he demanded a payment of $300 from the taxi driver and proceeded to threaten to revoke the permit of the taxi driver should the payment not be made.
It is further alleged on 29 June 2022, Qalomaiwasa accepted a payment of $100 from the same taxi driver.
FICAC State Counsel Mr. Rajiv Pathak has informed the Court that the first phase of disclosures has been served.
The Magistrate granted a non-cash bail of $500 for Alipate Qalomaiwasa and he was ordered not to change his residential address without informing the Court beforehand.
Qalomaiwasa was also ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and to report to the FICAC Office every month commencing from 8 July 2022.
The matter has been adjourned to 15 November 2022.
